Vibratory finishing media for jewellery, crafts and small workshops
Vibratory tumbling media is used inside a vibratory bowl, tumbler or finishing machine to help smooth, deburr, refine and polish batches of small components. It is especially useful for jewellers and makers who want to improve the finish of multiple pieces at once, while saving time compared with finishing every item completely by hand.
This range includes both ceramic media and plastic resin media, giving you options for different metals, shapes and stages of the finishing process. Whether you are cleaning up castings, softening sharp edges, preparing pieces before polishing, or refining small decorative components, choosing the right media can make a big difference to your final result.
Supplied in 5kg packs, this media is well suited to jewellery workshops, craft studios, colleges, repair workshops and small production setups. It is also a practical choice if you want to top up your existing media level or test a new media shape before ordering larger quantities.
What is Vibratory Tumbling Media Used for?
Vibratory media works by moving around your components inside the machine. As the media rubs against the workpieces, it gradually smooths edges, removes light marks, refines surfaces and helps prepare the parts for the next polishing stage.
- Smoothing rough or sharp edges on small metal components
- Refining cast jewellery pieces after sprue removal and clean-up
- Preparing items before polishing, burnishing or plating
- Cleaning up charms, pendants, findings and decorative parts
- Reducing hand-finishing time on small batch work
- Improving consistency across multiple jewellery pieces
Typical Jewellery & Craft Applications
- Finishing cast jewellery pieces before polishing
- Smoothing charms, pendants and small decorative components
- Softening edges on saw-pierced or cut metal parts
- Cleaning up brass, copper, silver and mixed metal craft pieces
- Preparing items before burnishing with stainless steel shot
- Refining small workshop batches with repeatable results
Ceramic vs Plastic Resin Media
Ceramic media
Ceramic media generally gives a stronger cutting and smoothing action. It is a good choice when you need more noticeable edge softening, light deburring or surface refinement on harder metals and more robust components.
Ceramic media is often used for:
- Silver, stainless steel, steel and harder metal components
- Light deburring after cutting, casting or filing
- Softening sharp edges before polishing
- General smoothing and surface preparation
Plastic resin media
Plastic resin media is usually gentler than ceramic media, making it useful for softer metals and more delicate pieces. It can help smooth and refine surfaces without being too aggressive, especially where you want to avoid excessive material removal.
Plastic resin media is often used for:
- Silver, brass, copper, aluminium and softer jewellery metals
- Delicate components, findings and decorative pieces
- Gentle smoothing before final polishing
- Reducing the risk of heavy impact marks on more sensitive work
Choosing the Right Media Shape
Media shape matters because different shapes reach different areas of the workpiece. Small pins and fine shapes can reach recesses and details, while triangles, cones, cylinders and pyramids can be useful for broader smoothing and edge work.
- Triangles: useful for edges, corners and general smoothing
- Cones: good for holes, curves and detailed areas
- Cylinders: useful for general surface contact and smoothing
- Pyramids: helpful for corners, recesses and mixed-shape components
- Fine pins or small media: useful for detailed jewellery and small parts
If you are unsure which shape to choose, think about the smallest recess, hole or detail on your item. The media needs to be small enough to reach the areas you want to finish, but not so small that it becomes trapped in the workpiece.
Why 5KG Packs?
Many finishing media products are supplied in large industrial bags, which can be too much for small jewellery workshops or craft users. Our 5kg packs offer a more manageable way to buy media for smaller machines and lower-volume work.
- Ideal for small vibratory bowls and workshop tumblers
- Useful for topping up media levels in your machine
- Allows you to trial different grades or shapes
- Easier to store than large 25kg bags
- Better suited to jewellery, craft and DIY users
- Cost-effective for small batch finishing
Important Note About Final Polishing
Vibratory media is excellent for smoothing, refining and preparing surfaces, but it is not always the final stage for a bright jewellery finish. For a high shine, you may still need a suitable polishing compound, burnishing compound, stainless steel shot, polishing mop, polishing wheel or hand-finishing stage depending on the metal and the result you want.
As a general guide, use more abrasive media for cutting and smoothing, then move to finer or gentler stages for refining and brightening.
Need Help Choosing Your Media?
Choosing the right media depends on the metal, the shape of your item, the size of your machine and the finish you want to achieve. If you cannot find the exact shape, size or grade you need, please contact us. We can advise on suitable options and can also supply larger 25kg quantities on request.
