Lighting & Magnification

Jewellery work is very delicate and demanding of good lighting for exacting results. Good vision is essential to comfort as well as results. A good place to start is an Optivisor.

Donegan Optivisor

Donegan Optivisor

Donegan optivisors are made with ground glass lenses, these are interchangeable. Supplied with one lens strength initially it is then possible to choose further additional lenses. The visor is light weight and tilts up for convenience. The DA-5 is the most popular and is a good place to start when selecting an optivisor.

Optiloupe

If more magnification is necessary, we would recommend adding an auxiliary loupe. This can be pivoted down when needed. It adds up to 6x magnification.

An Optivisor light can be a useful addition for adding extra light on the subject. You really can’t beat good lighting for working on a small scale. Attaches to the visor itself making the beam directional with your gaze.

If a loupe is required we stock an excellent loupe with integral LED lighting and 10X magnification. Consisting of 3 lenses which guarantee colour error-corrected and distortion free sight. Supplied in a really smart leather case it looks the part as well as performing brilliantly.

Daylight lamps are a really good option for jewellers because they provide the most natural lighting possible. It helps when colour matching, therefore ideal for enamelling, illustrating designs, choosing stones etc. It also helps when working on a very small scale to have natural light.

Wooden Ring Stick

In order to polish rings and chain safely you can use a ring stick. Wind chain on to the stick and hold securely to avoid chain getting caught up in the motor. Rings get hot whilst polishing so holding them on a stick is a great way not to scorch fingers.

Foredom Lighted Work Unit

Similar to the Foredom dust collector this unit offers extraction, light and additionally magnification. Both can be used at the bench with a micromotor or pendant motor, this unit however isn't for use with bench polishers.

Ultrasonic Tanks

Ultrasonic tanks are pretty much a workshop essential. They clean work up when the final polish is done removing all trace of finger prints and trapped compound residue. It can also be used to give worn jewellery a bit of TLC shaking out the residue of creams and build up from wear. The size of your workshop and workload really influences the size of bath required.

Sonic 6 is our ultrasonic cleaning fluid. A low hazard, biodegradable fluid ideal for cleaning jewellery components. Using a compound particularly helps for removing compound residues after polishing.

Ultrasonic Polishing

Ultrasonic polishing uses the same ultrasonic waves to polish rather than clean. It is a fairly new technique for the jewellery trade, but growing in popularity.

The waves are used to create a reciprocating action on a very small scale. Ideal for work where standard rotary tools can’t get to and ideal for flat surfaces that need to remain as flat as possible. Used with generally with ceramic stones it is a very precise technique.
