Polishing Flat metal surfaces can be a beast to finish. <strong>Scratches are hard to remove<\/strong> without creating dips and ripples in the reflective surface. I often find that I avoid flat surfaces because I know they will take a lot of finishing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">So the other day when I made a pair of medals in <strong>Sterling Silver<\/strong> I thought it only right to show how I tackled the flat backs. I used it with a right angle handpiece (JERA 270) for surface preparation and a straight handpiece for polishing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">**We also sell a\u00a0foredom right angle handpiece\u00a0which would also do the job for those with a Foredom Pendant Motor<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I used a self adhesive disc <a href=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/product\/abrasive-disc-holders\/\">holder<\/a> and Silicon Carbide (Wet &amp; Dry) <a href=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/product\/abrasive-discs\/\">self adhesive discs<\/a> in 10mm diameter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The stitched mops I used are <a href=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/product\/mounted-mini-mops\/\">here<\/a>, I&#8217;d also recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/product\/mounted-cotton-yarn-22mm-dia-2-35mm-sp\/\">cotton yarn mops<\/a> for a final finish.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-81 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress.jpg\" alt=\"amyrwyatt medals in progress\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.polishingjewellery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.polishingjewellery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.polishingjewellery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.polishingjewellery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.polishingjewellery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress-252x252.jpg 252w, https:\/\/www.polishingjewellery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/08\/medals-in-progress-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In reality most of us don&#8217;t have this sort of kit. My recommendations therefore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure the flattest finish possible before polishing. Use wet and dry paper, preferably on a flat surface. Get scratches out before polishing, trust me it&#8217;s easier to do it at this stage.<\/li>\n<li>Use <a href=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/product\/small-3m-radial-discs-19mm-25mm\/\">3M radial bristle wheels<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/moleroda.com\/new\/product\/mounted-polishing-wheels-bristle-hair-nylon-brass-steel\/\">traditional bristle wheels\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0to get into any detail. This avoids dips, the flexible bristles are much more forgiving.<\/li>\n<li>A bench polisher will give a quicker, higher quality finish than a pendant drill or micromotor.
